Embracing Big Tank Challenges

Embracing Big Tank Challenges
March 17, 2025

Before 2024, MP&C’s largest tank fabrication project had a diameter of 14 feet, a rare undertaking. When planning our fabrication shop expansion, which included a state-of-the-art 25,000 sq. ft. high-bay tank and vessel shop, we ensured the facility’s doors could accommodate tanks up to 16 feet in diameter through 20-foot wide openings.

Shortly after moving into the new facility in early 2024, an unexpected opportunity arose. A client approached MP&C with a request for a large-diameter tank. The client found themselves in a difficult situation – they had originally placed an order with another fabricator, but progress had been slow, and they were concerned about the quality of the limited work completed on sub-assemblies. The materials were already at the other fabricator’s shop, but only a fraction of the fabrication had been completed.

The client inquired whether MP&C would be willing to take over the project, which was less than 10% complete. The tank, with a diameter of 18 feet, presented unique challenges. While the tank would fit through the 20-foot wide doors of our new facility, the height, including nozzle protrusions, made it impossible to pass through any of our three large overhead doors.

To address this challenge, MP&C contacted our building contractor to modify the facility by increasing the height of one of the overhead doors. We communicated openly with the client regarding the lead time and the necessary adjustments to the door, ensuring full transparency throughout the process. As a result, we were able to deliver not only a high-quality product but also completed the project ahead of schedule, including the overhead door modification.

Once the materials were transferred from the original fabricator, our team of skilled fabricators fully engaged with the project. The tank required extensive internal piping, filter plates, and various other components. After thousands of man-hours, MP&C successfully met the client’s schedule and delivered a high-quality finished product, earning praise for the craftsmanship and precision of the work.
